After the Great Train Robbery British Rail realised that a more secure way of moving gold bullion and other high monetary value items around the network was required.

Five Mk1 BSKs were converted with the corridor connections removed, the sides plated over, leaving two double loading doors each side together with a single compartment and toilets for security personnel at one end. Roof pods were added and the bogies were exchanged for heavy duty bogies.

They had long lives starting in 1965 in lined maroon livery, through Blue & Grey liveries and one made it into MoD green, being used as a secure transport for munitions and escort vehicle.

All survived into preservation and private use.
