The 306s were introduced in 1949 for the Liverpool Street to Shenfield services. They were originally built to run on DC power systems but to standardise the systems over the British Rail network all 92 sets were rebuilt in 1960 to utilise the new AC system. This required a major rebuild of the sets and the rebuilt version is the model that we offer.

The 306s remained on the lines out of Liverpool Street for all of their lives and were withdrawn in 1980 and 1981 and all except one unit were scrapped. Unit number 017 has been preserved and is part of the national collection.
